MARSEILLE – Sailor Odile van Aanholt, along with her partner Annette Duetz, has won the first Dutch gold for Curaçao. Their victory came after a nerve-wracking finale in the medal race, where an initial misjudgment led them to believe they had already finished.
Realizing their mistake, they had to frantically sail further.
The medal race, with double points at stake, brought a lot of uncertainty. In the end, their two-point lead over the Swedish duo was enough to clinch the gold medal. Despite the chaotic finish, Van Aanholt and Duetz were able to celebrate their victory after a ten-minute wait, while Sweden took the silver.
Van Aanholt and Duetz started the race in a strong position, standing in second place overall, just one point behind France. Throughout the race, they appeared firmly on course for gold, but a mistake in identifying the finish boat added a dramatic twist.
However, Curaçaoan Van Aanholt and Dutch Duetz quickly recovered to maintain their leading position and secure the Olympic title.
