WILLEMSTAD – The Minister of Economic Development, Steven Martina, last Friday had the opportunity to meet with the new owner of the Plaza Hotel & Casino, Mr. John W. Burcham of the Waterfront Hotel Group. He is the investor and buyer of the hotel in Willemstad.
According to the Minister, who spoke with Burcham at the Curaçao airport, they spoke about the future plans for the hotel. Martina said that he was very satisfied with the intentions of the owner to renovate. The owner wants to open the hotel as soon as possible.
Martina says that the future looks good and that the hotel will flourish again. The potential operator of the hotel will be Hilton Double Tree.
As was reported before, the American John Burcham last Thursday bought the Plaza Hotel & Casino for nine million dollars. The Government of Curaçao will remain the owners of the Water fort (Boogjes) located next to the hotel.
The hotel was declared bankrupt by the Court of Justice. Fifty employees lost their jobs. It is not clear whether these employees will regain their jobs.
