Oliver Arrindell of Ava Airways: Minister Camelia-Römer is protecting monopoly

WILLEMSTAD – According to the Chairman of the Board of the aviation company AVA Airways, Olivier Arrindell, the current Minister of Traffic and Transportation, Suzanne Camelia-Römer is protecting monopoly in the aviation sector.

“This is causing serious damage to the flying public that needs a good air service, safety and competitive prices.”

Arrindell also stated that the Minister is violating all recommended ICAO practices to promote competition in air service in an equal plain playing field for all involved.

When the chairman was asked why he will not take legal steps against the Minister, he said Curaçao does not have a constitutional court. “Because of this, the Government of Curaçao can always play politics with issues that are of national interest such as air transportation. If you do not have a constitutional court, why do you have a constitution then? Who will hold parliament accountable,” said the chairman of the aviation company during a personal interview.

Ava Airways is a private company however the product and service it wants to provide is a matter of public issue and public benefit which is a constitutional right. “You are now stepping on Ava Airways constitutional rights as a Curaçao company and it has no Constitutional Court to file its complaints so the air transport system in Curaçao is a system of noncompliance and protectionism for one airline.”

According to Arrindell, the Minister even indicated that if AVA does not like the way things are going they can go to court. “However, Curaçao does not have a constitutional court, so in this case AVA Airways can only go to parliament to see a public inquiry and also accountability in the process.”

Arrindell indicated that he’s looking forward to the parliamentary meeting on this issue. “They are the representative of the people and they have a responsibility to uphold the constitution and the interest of the people.
