WILLEMSTAD – The collaborating animal welfare organizations will present a petition to Prime Minister Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas on Tuesday, urging to prevent the mass killing of stray animals.
Following a recent call by the Dierenbescherming (Animal Protection) to recruit dog catchers, the Dutch organization House of Animals (HoA) initiated a petition. HoA, along with various local foundations, has been advocating for animal welfare in Curaçao for years.
The Curaçao Animal Protection Foundation previously stated that they were forced to capture and euthanize stray animals due to a lack of shelter space. However, HoA argues that the killing of these animals is legally prohibited and counterproductive.
Local organizations, including Rescue Paws Curaçao, Dierenhulp Curaçao, Feed Friends Foundation, DOG Foundation, TES Foundation, and Kitten Rescue Curaçao, have joined HoA’s initiative. They have long been advocating for the TNRC method: Trap (capture), Neuter (spay/neuter), Return (release), Care (provide care). According to these organizations, this is the only way to effectively manage the stray dog and cat population.
The petition has gathered over 11,000 signatures and will also be presented to the Second Chamber in The Hague. The text of the petition calls for an end to the killing of stray dogs and cats in Curaçao and urges compliance with the law.
