WILLEMSTAD – The local gay rights group FOKO, is really disgusted with the declarations made by the Member of Parliament for the ruling party Pueblo Soberano (PS), Winnie Raveneau on homosexuality in general and same sex marriage in particular.
The group does not have any problems with the MP voicing her opinion from time to time. “That’s her freedom of speech, but what we do not accept is that she always indicates that we are a bad influence for the youth. This is not true, it’s not just and also not acceptable,” said Marlon Reina of FOKO.
The group is now considering filing a lawsuit against the MP for defamation. They are also considering filing a complaint with the Public Prosecutor.
The Pueblo Soberano MP requested a debate on this issue when the Dutch Parliament indicated that they were for a motion to have same sex marriage legalized in all parts of the Dutch Kingdom. It is already legal in the Netherlands.
In Curaçao there is a high level of tolerance, but there is no unified position on same sex marriage. “But it’s a question of time,” according to the interim president of FOKO, Reina.
