WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is at the center of a fisheries research initiative conducted by two Dutch students. This collaboration between the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature of Curaçao and Wageningen Marine Research in the Netherlands focuses on studying local fish populations and fishing techniques.

The students, hailing from Wageningen University, are working on projects crucial for understanding and improving fisheries on the island.

Their research involves the use of Fish Aggregation Devices (FADs), which attract fish and can enhance fishing yields. These are floating objects at sea that attract specific fish species, such as tropical tuna.

“A better understanding of FADs can lead to more sustainable fishing practices,” says Owen Clements, one of the project coordinators. “We particularly want to know which fish species are attracted and in what quantities.”

In addition to FAD research, the students also study catches in local ports to determine which fish species are most caught and how much effort fishermen need to exert. This research provides valuable insights into Curaçao’s fishing activities and can contribute to better fisheries management.

Masbangu

Another aspect of the research focuses on the Masbangu, a locally known fish species. The students investigate the age and reproductive behavior of this fish, providing essential information for the conservation and management of the species.

This 22-week project is led by Blanche Helena Madeleyn and Job Goorden from the HAS Green Academy in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. “This is a unique opportunity to gain practical experience while making a positive contribution to fisheries in Curaçao,” says Madeleyn.

The results of this research may lead to recommendations for optimizing fisheries in Curaçao, which is crucial for the local economy and the preservation of marine biodiversity.
