THE HAGUE – The Dutch government has decided not to recognize Nicolás Maduro’s election victory in Venezuela. The Netherlands demands that all votes be publicly counted and verified before acknowledging the results.
NSC Minister Caspar Veldkamp emphasized that the Netherlands, including its Caribbean territories, follows the European Union’s stance and does not accept the election results without proof of transparency and fairness. Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, also expressed doubts about the official counts, calling it a cause for concern.
International observers have stated that the elections were not conducted democratically. Furthermore, the opposition in Venezuela claims that their candidate, Edmundo González, is the rightful winner.
In response to this situation, the international community urges the Venezuelan electoral council to make the results transparently and fully available as soon as possible.
Due to the ongoing political and economic crisis under Maduro, approximately 7.7 million Venezuelans have fled, primarily to neighboring Colombia and the islands of Aruba and Curaçao. The impact of this on the Leeward Islands remains unclear.
The Dutch State Secretary for Kingdom Relations has not yet responded to inquiries about this issue.
