WILLEMSTAD – The Member of Parliament and former Prime Minister of Curaçao, Gerrit Schotte, recently reported to the UNESCO that the current government led by Ivar Asjes is destroying some buildings in the area Otrobanda that are listed as historical heritages of the world.
The demolitions have been undertaken in the framework of the construction of the new hospital.
UNESCO responded to the complaint in a letter to the Interim Minister of Transport and Urban Planning, Mr. Jose Jardim, expressing the serious concern of the international organization on what might be an irreparable damage to cultural heritage in the Caribbean and the world.
The buildings in question have great relevance in the context of Caribbean architecture of the Modern Movement. There are 2 buildings built by C. M. Bakkerrepresenting the only examples of this movement in Curaçao and are part of the invaluable diversity of architectural styles in Willemstad.
