Ministers Grappenhaus (NL), Weever (Sint-Maarten), Bikker (Aruba en Girigorie (Curaçao)

ARUBA–Aruba hopes to introduce an online pre-travel approval procedure for Venezuela like the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) of the US in September and St. Maarten is considering following suit.

Aruba’s border with the troubled neighbouring South American nation is closed. Since the island has no visa requirement for Venezuelans, other alternatives to control the flow of passengers were sought for when the ban is lifted.

St. Maarten also showed interest during its recent hosting of the Judicial Four-party Consultation JVO, reported Caribbean Network. Justice Minister Cornelius de Weever said they will explore if the legal grounds are present to take the same step as Aruba.

The minister added that the detention centre for illegal migrants at the Simpson Bay police station has reopened. “We can now man it, provide a doctor and see to it that everything is present so that it is done in a humane way,” he was quoted as saying.
