WILLEMSTAD/PHILIPSBURG--Italy recently finalised within the forty-day period the paperwork to extradite Francesco Corallo (56) from St. Maarten to Italy to face criminal charges there.

The request for the casino boss’ extradition was submitted to the Prosecutor, confirmed Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Gino Bernadina.

The Prosecutor will now submit the request to the Court as soon as possible to set a date for the handling of the case.

Corallo’s lawyers made a suspension request, but the Court rejected it. There were not “powerful enough circumstances cited by the defence,” according to the Court.

Corallo was arrested in St. Maarten on December 13 at the request of the Italian authorities. Charges against him include tax evasion and money-laundering. His provisional arrest was ordered by the Prosecutor under Article 10 of the Extradition Decision in relation to an extradition request.

Also arrested was Corallo’s right hand, Atlantis Group Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Baetsen (50). Baetsen has already been extradited to Italy.
