WILLEMSTAD–President-director of the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten (CBCS) Emsley Tromp will get the opportunity to react to a letter announcing the Supervisory Board’s recommendation and government’s decision to dismiss him. He was also banned from the premises.

According to the latter a possible prosecution of Tromp for tax fraud as announced by the Prosecutor’s Office makes maintaining him in his current function unacceptable. “There shouldn’t be any doubt in the integrity of a person, especially in that position.

“The Central Bank continues to sustain reputation damage through investigations into the affairs of the president. It is expected that the Central Bank will continue to suffer if Tromp remains in office, especially now that recent security checks have revealed that there was no screening in the context of fulfilling such a high ranking position.

“Based on all this the board decided that the current situation is untenable and has therefore made a recommendation to the two countries in the monetary union Curaçao and St. Maarten to dismiss Tromp as president of the bank. Prior to this they gave him a final offer for voluntary resignation, but without result.

“After more than a year, the president unexpectedly resumed his work last week and attempted to make important decisions on behalf of the Central Bank. He also tried to reverse some decisions that were already made.

“This development has caused unrest, aggravation of the situation and more damage to the reputation of Central Bank. The Supervisory Board and the countries Curaçao and St. Maarten felt it necessary, in addition to continuing the dismissal procedure, also to take measures against the president. He has been suspended and denied access to all areas and buildings of the Central Bank.”

Chos Romero is once again acting President-director of CBCS and the staff has been informed about this.
