Dutch islands and Dominican Republic seek to strengthen ties

THE HAGUE–Representatives of St. Maarten, Aruba, and Curaçao recently met with Dominican Republic Minister for Regional Integration Policy Miguel Mejia and his delegation about strengthening ties between the kingdom and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean island.

Mejia highlighted the efforts of DR President Danilo Medina for the integration of the region. He spoke of the need to promote the memorandum of understanding, an agreement drawn up in 2016. The agreement was signed with Aruba, Curaçao and San Martin in an effort to foster cooperation.

It also consolidates links in culture, economy, commerce, agriculture, water management, transportation logistics chains, innovation and technology. It also includes environment and disaster management.

Representing St. Maarten was Deputy Minister Plenipotentiary Hasani Ellis and Kelly Busby of the Cabinet in The Hague, Plenipotentiary Minister Lendert Rojer (Curaçao) and Juan David Yrausquin (Aruba).

Mejia said the Dominican Republic wants to accompany the Dutch Islands in this integration process. The vocation of President Danilo Medina is to develop the Caribbean community.
