AIRPORT–Study-financing recipients left from Princess Juliana International Airport SXM for the Netherlands on Sunday to start their tertiary level education.

The Airport with co-sponsor Domino’s Pizza hosted the annual Bon Voyage ceremony for all the 2017 scholarship recipients.

Those who were not traveling were also invited to attend the ceremony this year, according to Minister of Education Silveria Jacobs. The ceremony included music, food and drinks.

Thirty-three students travelled to the Netherlands with the support officers of the Division Study Financing (DSF), which has been a tradition established over the past few years. The DSF chaperones will also utilise the trip to meet with students currently residing in the Netherlands who have been experiencing difficulties and will provide in-person assistance.

The students will arrive in the Netherlands on July 31 at 12:00 midday. On their arrival they will be greeted at Schiphol Airport by Minister Plenipotentiary in the Netherlands Henrietta Doran-York, staff members of the St. Maarten House, Unified St. Maarten Connection (USC) board members, Study Financing guidance counsellors and volunteers.

The students will be shuttled to Steigenberger Hotel where a welcome ceremony will take place. They will be served refreshments and officially introduced to the study financing guidance counsellors as well as other stakeholders. At the end of the ceremony, the students will depart to their respective cities along with assigned volunteers.

An orientation week will take place from Monday, July 31 to Saturday, August 5. The activities range from registration at the Civil Registry, the Dutch Ministry of Education DUO and the banks, as well as city tours and outfitting of apartments.

The students attending Tallahassee Community College in the United States will be the only other group of students travelling together and will leave in August. All other students will be leaving on various dates in August to commence classes.
