THE HAGUE – Dutch Members of Parliament want a response from the Parliament of Curaçao on the oil refinery and particularly the motion presented by the MP Roelof van Laar.

The motion describes the lack of enforcement of environmental standards as unsound governance and human rights violations.

Through the motion, adopted in February, Minister Ronald Plasterk of the Interior and Kingdom Relations was instructed to insist on a maximum reduction of emissions within a period of three months. In consultation with Prime Minister Bernhard Whiteman and the Minister of Public Health, Environment and Nature Siegfried Victorina it was then decided to appoint two external experts for advice on refining and legislation.

Van Laar noted that he has not heard much from the Curaçao MPs on the manner in which his motion was carried out by Plasterk and the local government. “How do you they see their own role and that of the government and the Kingdom Council of Ministers?” He was second by his colleague Ronald van Raak. “Statements of the Dutch Parliament are of course directed to the Minister, but I understand the request to seek the opinion of the Curaçao MPs,” said Van Raak.
