Curaçao wants to import Dominican products due to Venezuelan crisis
WILLEMSTAD – This week the government of Curaçao said that it is interested in importing agricultural products from the Dominican Republic after the collapse of relations in that field between the island and Venezuela.

The cause is the crisis in the South American nation.

The information was provided by the Dominican Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) in a statement following a meeting on February 6 in Santo Domingo between its Director, Temístocles Montás, and the Minister of Economic Development Eugene Ruggenaath.

Both talked about the Dominican Republic’s economic policy on exports and its experience in the area of economy and development.

During the meeting, Ruggenaath explained to Montás the intention of his Government to establish trade relations with the Dominican Republic for the export of agricultural products, taking into account the fall of Venezuelan imports to Curaçao.

The Curaçao delegation’s visit is in the frame of the agreement between the Industrial and International Trade Development Company NV (Curinde), an institution that regulates the free zone regime on the island and the Council of National Free Trade Zones of the Dominican Republic.

The mission developed an agenda of meetings and visited different free zone parks and related institutions.

Montás pledged to the Curaçao delegation to organize a mission to the island in which the Ministry of Agriculture, the Export and Investment Center, the Council of Free Zones and local entrepreneurs of the agricultural sector, among other institutions, would participate to increase the exports of Dominican products to the Curaçao market.

Given the geographical proximity of Curaçao to Venezuela, there has traditionally been an active trade flow between that nation and the island, a situation that has deteriorated in recent years as a result of the political and economic crisis that shakes Caracas.
